Video editor for promo videos Which do you think is good?

Hey guys :msn-wink:
I used to make promo videos for some of my releases with ulead video studio, but they were static and nothing was going on there..

I'm curious which software do labels use? I mean.. some people or labels have nice videos with floating album arts or covers are spinning like in infrasonic rec videos, some labels have nice effects in the background.

Do you have any idea which software is able to make stuff like this?

The two obvious choices would be Sony Vegas or more likely Adobe Premiere Pro.

Most of the animations you see are created in Adobe After Effects.

You could get Adobe Creative Suite Premium which includes Premiere, After Effects and also Photoshop (plus a load of other media and web stuff) for about £900, or maybe less at student discount rates.

That package will probably only take about 3 years to learn properly......

How much is a DAW, and half a dozen decent plugins? About the same if you actually bother to pay for it right?

You want professional results you pays professional prices. There are no subsitutes for AE that i've found but you could substitute PS with GIMP and even Windows Movie Maker is functional as a basic video editing application.

yeah i know, but it's not so necessary.. DAW + 1 vst (I use only one) is something necessary to buy, and this is only something extra.. I'll have to deal with ulead video studio

For the video editing software you could use pretty much anything, but the logos and stuff are almost always made with AE as far as I know.

You can buy stock footage with for stuff like that though and just place some logos or text (made in Gimp for example) over the top.

I mainly meant something like this: http://www.youtube.c...fT9sd5HE#t=234s

It's not so hard to do I think, but maybe I'm wrong

Just use Gimp, Inkscape and WindowsLiveMovieMaker.. All free. No need for stupid 900£ stuff.

Btw. I've done bunch of logos, posters(huge wall to wall stuff), flyers, webpages and shirts with just Inkscape. Really cool stuff. It can even export in formats that all PROFESSIONAL print houses use.

There's no doubt you can do t shirts and logos in free software.

Doing the kind of promo videos that the OP was talking about is another matter however (although the one he linked to is very simple).

I've still yet to find an alternative to After Effects that's even affordable let alone free. And Windows Movie Maker is great if you just want to cobble some clips together with some audio, but it's no visual mix environment.

This was done with AE, and barely scratching the surface of what it can do.

Blender can do some nice logos and animations if you're willing to put in the time to learn it. And the price is right.

Isn't there anything simpler? A bit more advanced than Windows Movie Maker, but not as expensive as Adobe products? Is it that complicated to make some basic video FX on an album cover over some background?...

My friend had some poor version of Sony Vegas Pro and we did this video together
But it took very long to find out how to make effect like this (thanks God for youtube tutorials) and to export few times to check quality etc :msn-wink:

I've heard decent things about that, but as you say there's quite some learning curve.

I have tried Cyberlink Power Director but it's really clunky and the FX section is laughable. The real magic lies in the way Vegas and Premiere handle really subtle but HQ effects such as blends and transitions.

I'm sure there are other packages out there that come closer but i've yet to find anything that doesn't look amateur. Plus, those all important AE animations can look very cool.
