I really need some help finding headphones please! (:

Hey all! ...so my headphones just broke; now I'm in the market for some new ones. I was wondering if any of you know of some good over-ear studio headphones that translate very well to speakers for $200 or less? I've heard good things about AKG's, but I wanted to ask you guys! Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

AKG K121 Studio. The best headphones for producing and mixing under 200$. ;)
Worked with them some time ago, mixes translate perfect on monitors. In fact, the K121S and K702 are the only headphones i can mix on, without monitors...

BUT, it all depends on your taste, sound is very subjective, so you'd better listen some headphones before buying. :)

Ah, and one more thing, don't ever think buying closed headphones, they're rubbish for mixing and mastering. I'm saying this because there will be a lot of recommendations for the ATH 50M... which are decent, but not for mixing.

Hey man, i think you should go for the AKG K 240 MK II!

You can mix perfectly well using closed headphones as long as you keep referencing what you're doing, same as if you were using semi open or monitor speakers. They're just not as ideal as open ones.

I'll also recommend the AKG 240/271/121's but you really need to get a listen yourself.

Closed headphones translate better than open/semiopen headphones.

I have a pair of ATH-50M, i use them at least for 6-7 hours a day during work and during playing with reaper. Sometimes they(or my ears  ) get me in the woods during mixing btw a/b comparing with other tracks always helps.

Closed backs are primarily for tracking and not mixing. Open's are primarily designed for mixing and not tracking.

You're more likely to get a more accurate mix on open's, although how it translates onto other systems is entirely based on your ability to mix on them.

No sh|t, you have no soundstage at all and the bass is overwhelming due to the cans design.

And they are better if someone wants to sleep next to you. :)

+1 for AKG's

I demoed a bunch of other headphones in the same price range and when I tried the k240 mkII's I fell in love with them. Great clarity and no harsh highs, and they're really comfortable too. I forget I'm wearing them sometimes :P.

No idea where you got that from, but the best headphones I've heard have been open rather than closed design, unless your comment was aimed at closed?.

I think the phrase no shit may have been lost in translation a little.

But they don't cost $200 or less. The previous suggestions by MaDI were pretty good tbh. At the end of the day, based on these recommendations, he still has to do a sound test to see what works best for him.

Wow thanks for the fantastic replies guys! Your responses will aid me greatly :) however I am still torn on one thing: open vs. closed headphones. I am primarily looking for headphones to mix and master on. Which one should I go with? I am a bit confused because of the differentiating opinions on that subject :P

This.

Closed are better for tracking. I own a pair of closed, and also use it for mixing sometimes (curfew reasons). Before you buy anything though, if you do get a chance ---> test 'em out. Not just with EDM music, but different styles too.

K701, K271MK2, K701. Don't go for the MK2, they're good for vocal recording (no leak outside, because they are closed), but not suitable for mixing and mastering.

Don't say that, Bluffmonkey recommended me the MK2s, they have to be good :(.

They are closed, you cannot compare them to the opened ones. Closed are used for different purposes than opened.
The 271MK2 are very good, if you consider their class.
