Studio Monitors KRK RP - What do you think?

Hello guys,

I guess that this question has been asked million of times in the past. But because I have heard from many people that the best way to create music is to listen it through a decent pair of monitors instead of headphones (which I use up to date) I have decided to buy one.
First of all do you really think that a good set of monitors will make a difference to production?
Does any of you own KRK RP series? What do you think about them? If there is another model/brand which you think is better than KRK RP series please let me know.

To answer your last question first, there are hundreds of monitors that are 'better' than the KRK RP series, but it really comes down to your budget. How much do you want to spend?

I just sold my RP6s and they were great monitors for the money. They were my first proper studio monitors and I know my ears learned a lot in the time I had them.

In the same pricerange you may also want to look at Yamaha HS50s and JBL LST2325Ps

It's best to visit a store and hear them for yourself as a lot of your choice will be about your own personal preference.

First of all though, set yourself a budget! :msn-wink:

Each of those questions gets asked here about once a week. :wink1:
Try searching the forums a bit, and see if you can find more relevant info. Regarding the importance of studio monitors though, yes, a decent pair really will make a big difference in your productions. The KRK series is very popular, but what is right for someone else may not be right for you. Find a few decent monitors in your price range, and listen to them at your local dealer, as tehlord suggested. Most of the big name brands will have similar performing monitors at each consumer level, so you pick what you personally think sounds the best. Good luck. :smile1:

Thanks mate,

Of course the first think to think is the budget, but if they will not give the crisp sound that I am looking for then for sure I am going for something more expensive.
My budget is around 350-400 but as I said, if I have to, I could raise it a bit.
You have said for yamaha and jbl. Which one of these three you think is better?

That's more than true mate. Thanks for your advise. But do can you also suggest any at the same pricerange as RPs, so I can look for them in the stores? I would prefer to have a model in my mind when I will be looking for them.

$350-400 or £350-400 or €350-400?

I'd recommend the KRK RP8's to you, although they're just a bit above your budget at $500 US. Those were my first pair of monitors and they are great for the price. I would have kept them around after upgrading, but having two pairs of monitors their size would have called for a much larger desk. To be honest I kinda miss their sound, and usually got decent mixes out of them.

Hope this helps!

I have the RP8s...

To give you an idea of the size/look of them.

Obviously the most important thing is the sound - these sound absolutely lush. I use them for DJ mixing as well as producing and love them :)

If you get them you won't be disappointed!

WOW! Quite big ones huh?:P I had a smaller size in my mind. Mate are you using MoPads on your stands or not? I am living in an apartment and noise is very critical. I thought that by using MoPads it will absord some of the bass vibrations. Moreover have you any idea if it's fine to place them on the same desk as your pc? I heard some years ago the woofer was affecting the pc screen, but I dont know if it is true or if it is possible with the present technology. I am trying to save money by not bying the stands!

Virtually every studio monitor on the market today is magnetically shielded, so placing them near your screen will not produce interference. Actually, that is generally where you will want them too. For the best possible monitoring experience, you will want to create an equilateral triangle with the two speakers and your listening position (the same distance between the two speakers as it is from each one to you), so Joel's are actually much further apart than they probably should be. If you place the monitors directly on the table, you will want some type of stand or isolation pad, as you've mentioned. The bigger problem, usually, is not getting the monitors far enough away from the wall though. If they are too close to a wall or corner, the bass frequencies will pool and create an exaggerated effect.

Back to your original question though -- the Yamaha HS80's are supposed to be very nice. Another model you may want to look into is the Adam Audio A5. You don't hear much about them around here, but they consistently get very good reviews.
