Audio effect question How to achieve this effect?

Hey guys,
The effect I am after is one where an audio clip is taken, and a tiny portion of it is looped very quickly, and the loop start and end points sweep across the clip from the beginning to end together. It's a bit hard to explain, but a perfect example of this effect in action is in "Faithless - Not Going Home (AVB remix)" at around the 3:38 mark. Does anyone know how to reproduce this? I'm on Ableton, and I'm betting the Sampler instrument is capable of doing it by automating the loop points, but I don't want to drop >$100 for this. Are there any plugins out there that are capable of this certain effect? Or is there a manual way of doing it? (besides chopping the audio file into pieces and sequencing it that way)?
Any help appreciated. Thanks!

If I'm listening to the correct part (using a youtube video as reference), you might be able to accomplish this type of effect with the Glitch plug-in. It's a free VST tool that contains 9 different audio warping effects.

You can download here:

Here is a video demo of the plug:

Thanks innerlyte, Glitch would be an awesome option, but I'm on a Mac... Just my luck right?

For a direct reference, the effect can be heard at the 3:04 mark:

Any Mac-friendly options?

it's granular synthesis. most likely done with reaktor. the audio time stretching is automated to a point of where it's frozen, and then the pitch of the grains is automated up.

I've found a workaround to achieving this effect now! :D
Playing around with the demo version of sampler, I realized the loop start and end points cannot be automated (which would make life a whooole lot easier), but instead I was able to replicate the effect using simpler, arpeggiator, and some creative automation. If anyone wants to know how to do it, I can post a video how-to.

I'll try granular synthesis out, although I'm not too familiar with its general parameters. Thanks for the tip mattlange.

This Reaktor effect is actually being released within the next few weeks through Twisted Tools. It looks a lot like Glitch, right? They have a bunch of interesting products, but of course, you need the $500 Reaktor first..

Other synths capable of granular synthesis -- that I can think off of the top of my head -- are Camel Audio's Alchemy and the TI Virus line. You might be able to find a free plug-in kickin around out there, but I am not aware of any, myself.

Thanks innerlyte, that looks like a fantastic tool for audio mangling :) And fortunately I do own Reaktor (which hardly gets used by me) as a part of Komplete 5. I'll keep an eye out for that one.
