I give Armin 11 hearts (on the heart-scale) for his productions. Maybe 17 for his DJ'ing skills.

Ok I just saw him live two days ago.

I was inebriated.

I still thought it was horrible and I tried my best to give in to the hype of OHHH MY #1 DJ!!!

He played typical saw wave destruction trance...the stuff I liked when I first started listening to trance...

I was completely unimpressed by his set. But, when it comes to his productions, they aren't terrible, but I certainly don't think they are special in any way.

He is and always shall be a great dj. He dictates how good he is by the quality and type of trance around in any era. For instance he wasnt quite as good when tech-trance dominated around 2006-2007. Then just after when he overdosed on playing the vocal proglifting stuff. Just now for me hes as good as hes ever been. Some of his live sets in the last few months have made a mockery of everyone else apart from maybe JOOF and the likes of Ferry Tayle. But to be at the top and still play the music he does is quite something.

As for productions he has been hit or miss since his early days. The new album follows that trend but it is by far in a way better than Imagine ever was. He makes no secret him and Benno are great friends and Benno masters all the tracks and works alongside Armin as Armin says himself "its more fun with 2 people" but as shown by the videos showing how the ideas for the new album came about its clear the ideas for all of the tracks came solely from Armin himself.

The one thing that annoys me is folk seem to like to take pot shots at him given a chance. And for the life of me I cant quite understand why. ITs not his fault he has fanboys now and his popularity has skyrocketed in the commercial market. But he hasnt changed his sound to accommodate it that much ala Tiesto or what PVD did. Sure he plays some commercial stuff at some gigs but he will always play trance as again hes admitted himself.

All the tracks he played were just gated saw wave crap. if you don't produce you might not know what this means.

In other words all of the tracks he played were "in your face" trance. very boring after a while.

Armin got us (me and my gf) into Trance
Love the man for his passionate dedication
His parties and DJ skills are amazing.
I'm not a blind fan of all his productions, but he has some gems in there.
Completely in love with one specific track on his new release Mirage.
Look up "I dont own you *2010 Mirage*" on Youtube. It's an amazing deep trance track.

Going to the album presentation Thursday here in Belgium...

Wow! I really like "I don't own you". Thanks for the heads up, Wolfie! :)

Cant really beat a bit armin, does what a lot of the other big trance jocks do, but much better imo.

Production wise, hes a bit meh for me but I cant say anything particuarly offends me.

Ive seen him on countless occasions and hes always absolutely levelled the place.

Never seen him live, but heard his sets a lot and they sound awesome, so I guess he's pretty awesome!

On the producing side, I've gotta admit I like his earlier stuff like Touch Me, and I'm even partial to a bit of Broken Tonight at the right moment...still ain't got nothing on Oceanlab's stuff if I'm being honest, and there are so many other producers who I think have made soooooo much better music than him, but c'est la vie and all :sleep1:

Nowadays, average.
He makes the same electroish stuff many others do.
He has made some nice tunes in the 2 last years, but thats not that many, 3-4 tunes =P
Tuvan is nice, the new tune from there is meh if I remember correctly =P

His mixing is probably pretty nice, but now his sets probably has more of that new "trance" then TATW has =P

So I voted 3.

How can people say Armin is a crap producer when he has made stunning tunes

Blue Fear
Serenity
Communications
Sky Falls Down (Remix)
Sound Of Goodbye
Exhale

ect ect

Haiz, those were the good ol days indeed. Armin was the one who got me into trance too. I will throw in burned with desire, sail, zocalo. His Imagine album, although very vocal, was quality too.

Then he started to produce crap like broken tonight and introduce more techy basslines to his stuff. Mirage is so poppy and techy. Its like he has lost his focus. I respect his enthusiasm and work for trance but he has lost his sound

I doubt you'll get one and I don't think it's really Paavo. It's probably one of the mods.

Interesting - For all the times I've seen Armin, I've had to say he played his best when he played harder.

As a live DJ, Armin is one of the best on the planet. He's definately reached the rank of master jedi. Contrary to the opinion of most members here, I like most of his releases. Yeah some of his tracks from Mirage aren't that good but tracks like 'these silent hearts f/t BT' & 'take a moment' are great. As far as his a state of trance mix cd every year, they are decent but not his strength. Above & Beyond thrive in the mix cd/yearly Anjunabeats compilation with volume three being the best imo.

Producing and DJing are 2 totally different topics. :/

Just wanted to add my opinions and thoughts after reading some posts in here

First off Above & Beyond have been/still are my favorite producers. I feel that in terms of musical technicality/theory their background is unmatched compared to other top producers of the day.

That said, Armin's remixes/live sets/mashups are out of this world. I'm not too thrilled about his productions, as they don't quite "hit the spot" for me as A&B does; HOWEVER, I have to say that he is definitely ranks up there in terms of being the most passionate about what he does. If you look at Armin's youtube channel, he explains his ideas, inspirations, goals, and the stories behind specific tracks of his new Mirage album. Honestly, my first listen through the album, I wasn't impressed either, liking only maybe two or three tracks. After watching those videos though, I thoroughly enjoyed the tracks because I could appreciate the passion behind them.

As for the poster who claimed that this was the first album that he has produced himself, I'm not too sure, as I won't claim that I'm knowledgeable behind his earlier productions. However, Armin mentioned in his videos that he was going for a different sound in many tracks, which makes sense to me as it is normal for musicians to evolve and move in a totally different direction throughout their careers (ex. Linkin Park).

I also think accusing him of being a sell-out is a bit harsh; it's not like he's David Guetta or anything :P

Looks a good mix - will have to check out some of those tunes which haven't heard. Hadn't realised Armin had done a collab with Ferry before in that final track! Was thinking Minack was their first collab.

Yeah I saw somewhere that Benno from Rank 1 only started to work with Armin on the Imagine album and afterwards although not on the Mirage album. Imagine album was great! Liked Armin's early tunes too - still quite alot I haven't heard. Will have to check out his 76 & Shivers albums.
